ABOUT
2014 NW FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW DISPLAY GARDEN
GARDEN TITILE: IN OUR HANDS
DESIGNED BY: ANTHONY FAJARILLO
SUMMARY
Art is used to harmoniously combine multiple garden concepts into a striking display, supported with a message of environmental awareness. From the circular, palm-like
patio, five fingers emanate to small gardens of various styles: Northwest, Japanese, Asian Tropical, Waterwise/Drought Tolerant, and English Country. Recycled materials, hardy native plants and
edible varieties are incorporated liberally throughout to underscore environmental awareness and stewardship.
Of note is a stunning ceramic mosaic depicting an elliptical rendition of the Earth; when viewed through a window pane an unusual 3-D effect is created.
IDEA
We created a garden that not only incorporated art but also used art to send a message of environmental awareness and stewardship.
In a show, our goal is to bring something new or unique into our garden and help people imagine what's possible in their own yard, inspire them, and entertain them as well.
We knew that art was the theme for the Flower and Garden show this year. Taking that theme to heart, we created a display garden that in itself is art. What more, is that we wanted a subject matter that is important to all of us. The planet Earth.
We also wanted to do something that is seldom (if ever) done in a show. We want to showcase a garden that combines several styles of gardens into one. Typically we would see a certain garden style in a display garden. For our display garden, we took the extra challenge of showing a garden that will harmoniously combine 5 small garden styles into one display garden and still make it look harmonious and beautiful.
The idea of the palm patio was inspired by the photos below:
All together, the idea of a careful hand holding earth in its palm became the perfect art to send a message of environmental awareness and stewardship.
The garden title of "In Our Hands" is simply saying the future of our planet is all in our hands. As a community, we can do something together, no matter how small to keep this beautiful planet staying beautiful and sustainable for generations to come.
